There is a genre called magical realism, but I would place this book in the genre of realistic fantasy. Yes, magic is real in Grossman's tale: it is real in this world, at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy (the school of magic that the protagonist, Quentin Coldwater, attends), and in Fillory (the storybook world that Quentin and his friends discover to be a real world, too).
