Delia Owen’s debut novel set in the towns, marshes and swamps of rural North Carolina in the 1950s and 1960s features a finely drawn set of characters who aid and abet the charismatic, highly appealing protagonist Kya. Even though It was necessary for me to suspend my disbelief about many aspects of the plot I was otherwise so invested in discovering Kya’s Fate and having the mystery which is central to the novel solved that I gladly put my scepticism aside and just enjoyed the story.
