Initially I wasn't sure if Melmoth was a novel for me with its Gothic elements front and centre and its use of diary entries and letters to advance the story line. However my admiration for Sarah Perry’s earlier novel The Essex Serpent motivated me to continue reading and I am very pleased I did.
