I have yet to enjoy a Sebastian Barry novel as much as my first offering from him, The Secret Scripture and perhaps

is too reminiscent of
The Secret Scripture for me to take more away from the novel. I did enjoy the depiction of Lilly’s relationship with her son and grandson and the historical detail of the times but found Barry’s trademark elaborate prose a bit much at times. ...more
