This is a well constructed, quietly disturbing story outlining some major life events of three men in modern day Ireland. Meeting each of the men in turn allowed me to concentrate solely on his dilemmas and to empathise with him fully. The success Donal Ryan has doing this comes about through his judicious, limited use of ‘stream of consciousness’ writing.
