by Kim Thuy is comprised of observations or vignettes of the lives of an extended Vietnamese family before, during and after the Vietnam War. The air of intimacy which this structure brings to the novel ensures a strong connectedness with the characters; we know them as citizens stripped of their possessions and human rights in their war-torn country, as ‘boat people’ in Malaysian holding camps and as refugees struggling to make a go of their lives in a foreign country.
