Unfortunately I am unable to share the enthusiasm of a vast majority of the readers of the second of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels. Although the complicated, on-again, off-again relationship of friends Lila and Elena is the much admired centrepiece of the novel I did not ‘believe’ in the friendship and frankly became bored with the brooding, betrayal and feigned forgiveness practised by both women.
