H is for Hawk is a melancholy, poetically delivered treatise on the nature of grief and the possibility that human grief may be assuaged by an individual's relationship with a wild creature. In the book, the memoirist Macdonald and the author of The Once and Future King
T.H. White both seek to alleviate the despair of their personal situations by taming and training a wild goshawk. Macdonald tells us,

I did not finish this. The timing for reading this was not right, and maybe this was not the book for me. H may be for Hawk, but this is a book about grief and not about hawks. For many other people this is an amazing books to read, and that is great. Now was not the time for me to read this.
