is achieved through the gradual, skilful revelation of the events leading up to the crime as well as the reasons as to why and how the major players in the drama think and behave as they do. I realise I am probably amongst the last in Australia to read this, but in reading this I realise why I waited. This is a town you do not want to visit, it is full of lies, secrets and viciousness (and a few people who are resistant to these influences). This is a leisurely crime novel, and what crime/s occurred and how they were (not) effectively investigated is a key part of the story.
