When one considers the early life of the author Hisham Matar, it is unsurprising that the voice of his nine year old protagonist Suleiman is so strong and convincing. Like Suleiman, Matar’s Libyan family lived under the spectre of the Gaddafi regime’s political persecution and was eventually forced into exile.
