What Members Thought
Thoroughly enjoyable, uncomplicated novel with a likeable range of characters, many of whom I had read about in a non-fiction form in Simon Winchester’s The Men Who United the States: America's Explorers, Inventors, Eccentrics and Mavericks, and the Creation of One Nation, Indivisible Chevalier’s novel convincingly gave flesh to the pioneers, industrialists and mavericks of 1850s America outlined in Winchester’s book and motivated me to read more of her historical fiction work.
