The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a fascinating crime thriller that follows Detective Mikael Blomkvist and a young computer hacker named Lisbeth Salander as they investigate the mysterious disappearance and supposed murder of Harriet Vanger forty years after Harriet vanishes. The book is extremely vivid, and the underlying social commentary on rape and abuse Larsson has added is still exceedingly relevant to today’s climate, despite the book being fifteen years old.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a fascinating crime thriller that follows Detective Mikael Blomkvist and a young computer hacker named Lisbeth Salander as they investigate the mysterious disappearance and supposed murder of Harriet Vanger forty years after Harriet vanishes. The book is extremely vivid, and the underlying social commentary on rape and abuse Larsson has added is still exceedingly relevant to today’s climate, despite the book being fifteen years old.

As a girl, she was a legal prey, especially if she was dressed in a worn black leather jacket and had pierced eyebrows, tattoos, and zero social status.

Larsson creates a story that captures his reader’s attention while also shedding light on the abuse and mistreatment of women in Sweden at the time the book was written. The novel is incredibly well written, and the sensitive topics discussed are approached with delicacy and grace, allowing them to blend effortlessly with the story while still making his statement on abuse clear and unavoidable for his readers. Larsson allows the reader a view into many of the characters’ lives rather than telling the story from a single viewpoint. This enables the personal challenges of each character to be seen and highlights the deeper message on rape in Sweden. The abuse and assault portrayed in the book force the reader to become more aware of a larger international issue that has affected society for generations. Though the book is a work of fiction, the exceptional writing that Larsson provides allows the reader to enter the story and work with the characters to solve the mystery of Harriet. The emotions and experiences that the characters feel and encounter are described so vividly that the reader feels almost as though he is present during the events, creating an extremely enthralling and successful book.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is beautifully written. Larsson does an incredible job incorporating themes of betrayal, friendship, trust, and abuse into the novel to create and unpredictable and enrapturing story. Larsson sets up his novel simultaneously as a crime, political, and journalistic thriller that is sure to excite many adult readers.

Because of the heavy themes of abuse and rape, those who are sensitive to these topics should be wary when considering this book. However, those looking for a quick-paced, exciting, and eye-opening thriller should certainly check out The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. ...more

I read this for the first time 8 years ago. My book club is reading it, so .... It was just as addictive this time as last. The writing pulls you in and you just have to finish the book.
