Smith's clever writing is very much on display here. Using various characters in Spring, Smith expresses her frustrations with the modern world - particularly for this novel Brexit and refugees in the UK. The use/appearance of Rilke and Katherine Mansfield is an awkward tool but otherwise this is great; better than Winter but Autumn (which I think most readers agree) is still the best. ...more

As with other novels in the quartet, Spring is a political book. Ali Smith conveys the injustices of the immigration system and, as usual, condenses whole thoughts into short sentences which leap immediately to the point:
“I still carry the fear on my shoulders... fear will always be one of my belongings.”
