Autumn is the 3rd book that I've read by Ali Smith. Ali Smith novels are not your typical novels. The narrative is not linear and the prose is lyrical. She is not for everyone.

This book, the major premise of which is a friendship between a young girl and and old man, raises important and uncomfortable questions about unlikely friendships, and in the process, got me thinking deeply about friendship beyond just this specific type of pairing. Add Ali Smith's gorgeous writing, and her penchant for writing happy, fulfilling lit fic, and you have a recipe for a thoroughly enjoyable, pensive meander through this book, preferably with a cup of tea.

Ali Smith's prose is rambling and poetic, at times insightful and sometimes confusing. This book is about friendship and aging, racism and fear, history and future, hope and just getting by. It's hard to pin down, but reminds me of reading Jeanette Winterson- the effort involved and the reward.
