This was excellent.
First off, Mary Beard is a badass historian, and it shines through these essays like a beacon.
Second, what a measured, engaging, and important pair of essays. Beard delineates, clearly and simply, how the tradition of silencing women and separating them from power has been part of the Western world, and especially the Western intellectual tradition, from its infancy. An approachable feminist essay you can read in one sitting. Lots to discuss and so much content in this short but serious read. Picked this for book club, and we had so much discussion content. I loved the way ancient history was used as a foundation to understanding the climate today. A modern feminist manifesto must-read.
