Read this as fast as I read Harry Potter series and Red Rising. The Hate U Give has one of those bittersweet endings because it's a real ending. For as fictional as the story is, it's very much real life for a lot of America. I couldn't put it down. It was every bit riveting, compelling, and engagingly truthful as the reviews have said. I haven't read a book I related to the way I did this one in so freaking long. I feel like this touches on a very important and somewhat other side of the coin bit about being black. You have Starr who is from the ghetto, who alsoattends an affluent school outside of her neighborhood comprised of races who are stereotypically more wealthy (i.e white people and some asian).

In this Starr is playing two sides of her blackness and it's depicted in a way where she has to be one or the other. The hood girl who knows how to brawl, and is just connected to the ghetto in a way you can only be by being raised there, versus the intelligent girl at a private school who has to hide her ghetto side so she doesn't become a statistic of the stereotype. This is a thing many black kids face. Those who have to struggle with the perception of their skin and the prejudice of their own people for behaving in a way that's deemed "not black enough". And all of this is enhanced when her friend is murdered in from of her eyes. A white cop killing a black kid is something, however, that she can't separate herself from. It's a really interesting story in the sociological sense.

That being said, it being banned for language is absolute crap. It's the fictional true depiction of police brutality and injustice with regards to white cops and people of color that has a school district up in a huff about it. You can't ban truth. While this story is fictional is 100% based on true events. It shouldn't be banned because this is a highly important and undeniably relevant book. I was really impressed. Not sure why it took me so long to get to, but I did stay up all night reading it because it most definitely is that good of a book. ...more

This has been on my list for so long, but I'm ashamed to admit that it took the pandemic and George Floyd's murder to make it an urgent read. I thought Bahni Turpin did a great job in narrating this book, really making it come alive in all of its humor and heartbreak. ...more
