A thoroughly enjoyable, and very well-researched, biography of Catherine the Great. I was inspired to read it after reading The Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great and wondering if Catherine (and Elizabeth) really had that much sexual freedom, that much power. And it seems the answer is yes, they really did. The mind boggles. When Catherine couldn't conceive with her lawful husband (perhaps because they hadn't had sex) she was encouraged to seek a sperm donor elsewhere. Everyone seems

Massie is an incredible writer. Once again, he immersed me into the time of his subject - this time the subject being Catherine the Great and her world. I am looking forward to continuing reading about the Romanov dynasty in the next book! ...more
