Sometimes you check a book out from the library, and then it happens to be on hand when you have a lot of sitting and waiting to do, so you read it in one sitting, regardless of its actual inherent value. That’s what happened with this one. It wasn’t good, but it was interesting, in one point in particular.

Many people here have complained they didn’t like any of the characters. I’m starting to feel about this statement the way art connoisseurs must feel when somebody objects that a painting “is

A Great and Terrible Beauty has edged its way onto many a tabletop display in bookstores and I finally decided to break down and see why. This one was enjoyable - Teenage girls at a boarding school in the Victorian era. Magic and heartache and all that good stuff. Her friends are kind of awful, but it worked. It was a bit over the top, but I like that. The next on will be on hold for me soon, I hope.

A very engrossing read, but I would have loved more at the end. (I'm a twit and didn't realize that this was a series. Abrupt ending is quickly forgiven!) ...more
