This is a very interesting idea with today's total infatuation with beauty, which, ever since I heard on the show BONES is a sign of declining cultures, has kind of creeped me out.

The story itself and the idea behind it are well thought out and I like that it's told from the perspective of a sixteen-year-old, who would be very prone to this kind of thinking and story. This story has a great concept behind it and that helped me get passed my initial dislike of the main character Tally and her friend Shay. I began to enjoy the characters more as the series went on though. Overall I think I liked the themes and ideas more than the actual story (which I was able to predict most of while I was reading. But I'm intruiged enough to pick up the next titlein the series, Pretties. We'll see how that goes. I'm anticipating a future love triangle... ...more

This is in my pile of "what the world could be like if we don't shape up" young adult science fiction books. In this version, people are "ugly" (officially) until they reach 16 and have a full body makeover, basically, and become officially "Pretty". I liked the story a lot, but it didn't really END as much as say "To be continued". I know it's hyped as the first in the trilogy, but I wasn't so satisfied with that. Sigh. Now I have to read "Pretties". ...more
