This was good, but I wanted it to be better. Many people have described it as incredibly inspirational, and I didn't find most of the book to be that, with the notable exception of the two well-known speeches she gave at Dartmouth's graduation and at Human Rights Campaign. To be fair, possibly the book was not so inspirational to me because I'm reading it several years after she wrote it, after Obergefell, after the 2016 elections, after #metoo. It's also possible that because I'm an introvert,

iiii...am kinda surprised the writing in this book wasn't better? i mean rhimes is a writer, it's her job, and i've enjoyed what i've seen of her work (how to get away with murder). a lot of this book felt unpolished and repetitive though. good! but with definite stylistic weaknesses. still, it was addictive enough that i basically skipped dinner in favour of reading so:

Disclaimer: I’ve never seen an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, not out of any sort of protest, I just never got around to it.
This was a very uneven book. Mostly part memoir, very little how-to, despite the subtitle. There were some gems - I loved her thoughts on toxic people and dreams. And while I totally admire this hardworking and smart lady, I felt like I was reading her well-written journal, and I got tired of the navel-gazing.

I see why people love this book--Shonda embraces parts of herself she didn't know were there in order to truly change her life. That's great, it worked for her and she doesn't necessarily suggest her path as the path for anyone else. It's the path for her, who has so often said no to things and hid out in her house. Now, I've watched my share of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal so I know a few things about those shows and I've learned that Shonda has truly written herself into those. In many ways, she

The content of this book was great, but the writing style was

Example:
"Because it is.
It's me.
It's me and it's them.

Another example:

It would be fine if that kind of thing (short sentences on separate lines) were lightly sprinkled throughout the book, but it's on every. DAMN. PAGE. Love Shonda. Love her shows. Love her creativity. But I guess I don't love her writing in this format. Was expecting more and a little disappointed. However, 10000% love the idea of a year of yes and the bravery it required and the changes she made.
