In this novel we meet the devil, Pontius Pilate, writers both in and out of an asylum, and people running a theater. Because it is during Stalin's reign, there are lots of cops and crowded apartments. It's all mostly funny and there is some magical realism thrown in.
Lots of Russian names can be overwhelming to keep track of, so just keep reading, you need to go for the flavor of the conversations, without getting too bogged down in who is who. I was very grateful for the notes at the end of this ...more

I went into this book with expectations that were 100% inaccurate. I assumed the book would mostly be about "The Master" and "Margarita" which apparently was part of Bulgakov's plan.
It took me a long time to read this book. It is not a book you can fly through. Very dense, with lots of religious and political references (which in my edition were noted in the back, thankfully). Everything seems to have a meaning in this book.
