In Poisoned Apples, Heppermann repurposes fairy tales (as well as other pop culture media like commercials and magazines) to explore body image issues of interest to young adults. She puts particular emphasis on anorexia and gender norms. The very short poems are often darkly humorous, several making me laugh out loud. The poems are coupled with black and white photos submitted by a variety of photographers, so they don’t illustrate the poem so much as hope to echo the aura of it. I was expectin ...more

I was disappointed with this. Feminist fairy tale poetry with a present-day twist sounded right up my alley. But I found the poetry pretty mediocre—I liked the idea more than the execution. I like poetry that pays attention to the craft of words, to how sounds & meaning intersect. This wasn’t that. It likely fits into the Instagram poetry genre—which just isn’t for me. Admittedly, I’m not the target audience, and I I might have liked it better as a teen.
