Shelves: read-harder-challenge
Gorgeously written; these essays dropped me into a time I never knew, but many places and spaces I am familiar with, and those I didn’t know I felt I came to know. This was my first Joan Didion and I look forward to reading all her others.

I chose this for my book discussion after so many people mentioned it on Twitter under #booksthatchangedmyworld. While I can't say that it did that for me, I can understand why it might have made an impact when it was written. Didion writes well, but her journalistic style keeps the reader at a distance. And the collection as a whole is a pretty random pot of essays, some which did not interest me at all. But the title essay is definitely solid and attempts to tie the collection together. ...more
