Wow. Could not put this down. One of the most gut-wrenching, brutal, beautiful books I have ever read.

Roxane Gay is an addictive writer. She also clearly understands trauma and when she writes about it, it reads like it's happening in real time. But I would like to read a version of this novel where she understands recovery as well as she does trauma. She foreshadows that the main character's recovery is long and difficult and life-changing, but she does not deal with the reality that the process of recovery requires a different kind of fight than the fight to survive.
