Definitely one of the best books I read in 2016. Part mystery, part legal drama; also slice of life on the Rez and coming of age.
Joe is a 13-year-old boy with the summer stretching in front him and his friends, when his mother is brutally raped and beaten. She knows her attacker and she knows why, but she's not talking. Erdrich is at the top of her game in describing how nothing is simple on an Indian reservation -- not familial relationships, not legal jurisdiction, not grief.
