It is amazing how a 300-page novel makes me learn so much. Homegoing is a story about knowing your root and getting to know your ancestors with so many intricate details. I wasn't born in an environment where I can interact easily with Africans or black people in general, but I was born in a country that was colonised by white people (Dutch, English, Spanish, Portuguese) and I kept thinking about those days of colonisation, which makes this book so relatable.
I really love this book. I think it

This book blew me away. I'm struggling to write this review because I don't know how to explain the heartbreaking devastation of this book. If I hadn't picked this for our book group, I might have put it down because it was difficult to take in just how truly evil human beings can be to one another. I'm so glad I hung in there; this is one of those books that will stay with me forever.

Rural Ghana to coastal cities to the American South; Great Migration to NYC; and all the while, one family’s generations and different branches attempt to sort out the meaning of “home” to them, either succumbing or resisting the draw of other places and alternative potential existences. Fascinating, wonderfully written.

This book should be required reading. Beautifully written, inspiring, heart breaking, and filled with love. This book is a 300 year journey starting in Ghana with Maame and her two daughters: Esi and Effia. The story then follows the two lines of Esi and Effia’s decedents. The story can be intense and difficult to consume, but that makes reading it all the more important. And, the end was moving; I loved how the story ends back at its origins. Highly recommend.

I put this book aside for a month after I started it as I felt I was not "ready" to read it. Whatever that means.

I'm glad I waited to read it with undivided attention. Normally I have a couple of books on the go, but I'm happy I let this one have my undivided attention.

The dual family trees were so intriguing and compelling.
The style of writing is uncompromising. The stories are confronting. Yet hopeful.

Told as a series of interrelated short stories, this history from African slave traders t
