Even 10 years after its original publication this is still a very important book. Alexander analyzes the impact of law enforcement and mass incarceration in this age of "colorblindness" and "post-racial society" in the USA. The 10th anniversary edition has a long intro by the author discussing what has and hasn't changed in the past 10 years.

Just last week, I read The Skin We're In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power, which is on a similar topic but focused on Canada.

Highly recommend!

As a landlord, that concerned me, but after reading this book, I get it. It would be one thing if rules and laws were applied across the board, but they are not. ...more

This book is a difficult but necessary one, even though it came about almost a decade ago it still feels prescient and like it could’ve been written yesterday. Not much has changed unfortunately. This is an important book to understand the effects of mass incarceration on black Americans.
