Wharton blows me away. I liked "House of Mirth" better, but still greatly enjoyed "The Age of Innocence." Her depiction of early New York society is so vivid and contemporary that it made me feel as if I was sitting right there in the various ballrooms and drawing rooms with Newland Archer. It strikes me that society really hasn't changed much since then--there are still tacit obligations, and miles of unwritten code we all have to dance around to be polite and get along.
