I liked Tan's writing in the sense that it felt modern and colloquial, but still touched on important topics. The book talks a lot about the supernatural, what love means, and lost connections to culture. I thought the end part of the book was particularly interesting, and I enjoyed the book's comments on relationships and mortality.

This book is a mystery to me. Flash forwards and flashbacks, real life, Yi life, fantasy and reality. It's all woven together in this tight, yet sprawling narrative about the pains we suffer from those we live and how we can go lifetimes to make up for past mistakes.

Amy Tan's books all kind of blur together in my mind, but I've liked all of them pretty well.
