I loved it. I will not mention that nonsense about how wonderful the use of dialect is - dialect is what it is. What I loved about it was that Janie was real. Real women are not always militantly sassy, and sometimes they have doubts. Sometimes it takes them some time to realize what they like and what they don't like, and sometimes they choose to stay with men they're not so into for various reasons. It is clear why this is a classic. It shares the story of Janie, her three husbands, and her growing comfort with herself. When it was recommended to me, there was a great emphasis on the focus on African American culture in a specific time period. It is unique for use of dialect and its limited connection to the white society around it. But what really spoke to me was the feminist undertones of the book. This was one of those books that I just never got around to reading - until now. The dialect was a little difficult to follow but opened up a window into the past and gradually into the life of the protagonist, Janie. It was intense and sad and lovely by the end.
