In this dystopian future USA, society has devolved into lawlessness & chaos (an interesting contrast to the world of Handmaid’s Tale). Lauren, a hyperempath who physically feels others’ pain, narrates her life via journal entries as she seeks to survive and bring others into her religion of Earthseed. A tough, disturbing, distressing read, but so far ahead of its time that it boggles the mind. It is also a truer reflection of what the demographic of catastrophe will look like than anything I've ever seen, also far ahead of its time. There is some repetition here, but it can be seen as a craft choice meant to convey the way violence, dehumanizing behavior, and death becomes commonplace in this dystopic future.
