This was a lovely book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took me a while to jump into it, but once past the first 30 pages or so, it only took me two late-night reading sessions to gulp it all down. I loved the characters, and Edmund is my favorite. He's so lovably clueless sometimes that its adorable. I also found myself very able to relate to Fanny. Two thumbs up! ...more

I read this book in college and so this was only a re-read. It was pretty good but, as discussed in the introduction, I just can't compare Fanny to Austen's other heroines. She is so meek and mild and, dare I say it?, boring. Still a page-turner, though. And I didn't have the active almost dislike that I had with Emma upon a second reading, so that's saying something, right? I just think it's funny that this book is supposed to be her finest. Why? With the odd feeling I'm insulting a friend I can only give this book 2 stars. My usual love for Austen was nowhere to be found in this book. I know the main character Fanny is praised by others for her kind heart but I felt she was downright boring. Edmund was as life like as a card board cut out of the typical "good guy."
