The best thing about this book is that I can't decide whether I hate Emma, or really empathize with her. She has everything going for her - beautiful, clever, rich, happily single - and yet she manages to meddle and mess up a bunch of her friends' lives, repeatedly misunderstand what is happening around her, and overall be so much less than she could be.
I'm reminded of a line from The House of Mirth: "Under the glitter of their opportunities she saw the poverty of their achievement."

After reading Sense & Sensibility, and trying to slog through Mansfield Park, I had almost given up hope that Jane Austen had written anything that could surpass Pride & Prejudice. Emma doesn't quite, but it's in solid second place. Though there are a lot of ridiculous twists and turns in the plot, we are with Emma for the whole of the book and she is a delightful companion. Even though I'm stuck doing a lot of reading for school, this was the one book I would escape with whenever I had a break.

Think this is the first time I've read this since watching the (imo terrible) Gwenyth Paltrow movie version ages ago. The book is obviously so much better than the movie. Particularly enjoyable since my memory of the movie had lowered my expectations.
