It wasn't that long ago that I read Pride and Prejudice, but reading this reminded me of why Jane Austen is considered one of the greats. Her writing is so wry, so clever, that you do have to concentrate to get the joke subtly worked into the end of the sentence. Despite their many differences, this skill makes her very similar to Gabriel García Márquez on this point, and illustrates why they are two of my favorites. It was good to find out what really happened in the story, compete with more complicated relationships, different points of view for storytelling, and Willoughby's attempt at vindication at the end. But overall, I liked Emma Thompson's movie better! And thought this was much less heart-felt than Persuasion, my favorite so far.
