I truly enjoyed the play of this story, performed at our local high school last year. Mrs. Bennett, is especially hilarious. Also, I liked the Kiera Knightly version I saw on DVD, though Ms. Knightly looked a bit gaunt to play Elizabeth, in my humble opinion.
As to the book, I believe Ms. Austen does go on a bit. In chapter 42, she has a rather depressing passage about Mr. Bennett:

I've lost count of how many times I've read Pride and Prejudice, but this time, I read this version aloud to someone who had never before experienced the joy of P&P. I must say, it was rather delightful to be part of someone's first time. Pretty sure I like the movie better. Not really into Austen's frequent analysis of bourgeoise culture. But this book is admittedly better (more bearable) than Emma. I probably need to subject myself to a re-read to be sure, but, eh, I'd rather not.
