I wasn't sure how we were supposed to experience the novel. Were the secrets revealed toward the end supposed to surprise us, or was it just more that Iris didn't know what was going on and we were supposed to identify with her naivete/ignorance? And are we supposed to enjoy the novel-within-a-novel?
