Simply adored this book. I picked it up for "The Atlantic's" 1 Book 140 Twitter book club and was a little nervous-- it is a little outside my normal reading. That said, once I got into it, I loved it. Family drama, a love story, houses that are fully realized characters, and all set in the early 20th century. What's not to love?

Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite writers as she is vivid and writes with such texture and imagery that you can't help but be transported. She can take emotion like loneliness or isolation and paint with it, thickly, palpably, so that you feel it and truly understand it. She's just fantastic. This work starts with seemingly unconnected threads, and then is woven together so that by the end you have full understanding. Brilliant.
