This book is fascinating. I learned about cultures and sub-cultures of which I had previously been ignorant. While the characters made some choices I would not I could understand the choices they made, even if they were poor. It speaks a lot to the author for me to be able to imagine these complex individuals with lives so different from my own. I highly recommend.

A wonderful, important and fully engaging novel. More than a love story, or a coming of age story, it's an intimate, exuberant piece of writing.
