Have you ever read a book that made you think, How does the author do it? How can he/she make every sentence like a work of art? That's how I felt about this book. I'm in awe of Wharton's writing. Was she born with this talent? Did she learn to write this way? A bit of both? I'm also amazed at her ability to make The House of Mirth both a comedy and a tragedy. Rise and tragic fall of Lily Bart in New York Society around turn of 20th century. Kind of painful to see that era's version of gender roles, which the novel spends much time contemplating but never challenging.
