Reading this book, I understood more fully why Jesmyn Ward's fiction reads like it does - often bleak, filled with the particular kind of violence that springs from rural poverty and the blatant hatred of many of the people supposed to be one's neighbors. I cannot imagine losing five young men so close to me in such a short period, but Ward paints the reader as vivid a portrait as is possible about how such a situation might come to be and how it feels.
