What Members Thought

The first half was what I thought the book would be about, and the second half drifted to touch on some of the themes of Solnit's other works. I'm a big fan of hers, so it was interesting, but the first part was best. It brings together very recent (2012) events in the course of explaining the phenomenon of sexual entitlement, still operating in the US and around the world today. Made me think.

I expected this collection of essays to focus more on mansplaining, but was surprised, as was the author herself, to find it focused more on the outgrowth of phenomena such as mansplaining: physical violence against women. Most of the essays in the book address bleak numbers and stories of the various forms of violence and if not violence, the associated silencing women face and that violence seeks to create.
