I enjoyed this but did not feel the need to know every clothing and accessory detail of Patti Smith and Robert Mappethorpe. Suffice it to say, they spent a lot of time getting ready to go places. They also spent a lot of time in poverty, which is interesting for a while. Smith drops a lot of interesting (to me) names related to the pair's stay at the Hotel Chelsea. Lots of other poets and musicians were less familiar.

I had seen this recommended on a few different book blogs, so I thought I'd pick it up. It was poetic, moving, and interesting. Well written--never a dull moment. I always worry about reading memoirs that it will be filled with details I don't care about, but as I was reading this I kept thinking even if it wasn't a true story it would be a good book.

This makes me want to delve a little further into artists and poets of the 60s and 70s. And into Rimbaud.

As "Because The Night" would definitely make it on a CD of my favorite songs, I was excited when this was selected for book club this month. The writing of this story was so poetic and emotional. I wept through the entire final section. What a beautiful relationship between two people. Of the photograph (taken by Mapplethorpe) of Smith which became the iconic cover of her album Horses, she wrote," When I look at it now, I never see me. I see us." I couldn't put this down. I read it once, then immediately again and have given it as a gift to my favorite friends. It's beautiful, thoughtful, thought provoking and lovely, a great homage to true love and friendship. ...more

I'm almost finished, damn! I was borrowing the book, and I had to take of for Down East to cook on a private island. I didn't feel comfortable taking a borrowed book so far away, and in such heated conditions (the kitchen). Don't tell me how it ends... ...more
