I kept wanting to talk to people about this book while reading it. Alas, I have a hard time remembering names and facts I hear in audiobooks, but thank Google, I can still talk HeLa with my dad. This book is super sciencey, but it's even more about ethics in research and the history of inequality in American medical practice. Oh, and family. This covered lots of things I care about: personhood and research, the limits of informed consent, commodification of science and the self, ethics, popular understandings of science and science literacy... I enjoyed the prominence of Skloot's role as the writer, both in conveying her passion for telling Henrietta's story, and in relating the relationship and trust she developed with the family in the process.
