I once debated "the best book in the world" with a guy at a bar. He didn't ask me for my number, so it wasn't a pick-up line (!), but I was talking with friends about Love in the Time of Cholera by GGM, and how it was/is my favorite all-time read, and he interrupted to argue for this one. I picked it up, and read it, and can see why he enjoyed it so, but I didn't love it. I'm not crazy about the conclusion--I think the plot point is an easy and cheap shot, which I shall not ruin for future reade

This is a beautifully written novel about an Indian family in a small village. The writing is lyrical and poetic, yet the story isn't bogged down by it. It is a full sensory reading experience. Highly recommended.

A recommendation from a friend, and I loved it. The courage of the language, the voice, the structure of the story -- we learn the end in the beginning and the middle in the end. A book that's truly about the journey.
