I'd give Greg Mortenson five stars for what he's accomplished in his life, but the book only gets three. Partially for its annoying use of the third person in a book co-authored by the central "character." And partially for its over the top admiration of that central character. Yes, what he has done is admirable, but a lot less gushing description would have sat better with me (and made the book a lot shorter and more readable, too). ...more

This was an excellent book. Inspiring, educational and proof that you can really do anything and help anyone if you are determined.

This book was a fast read because I couldn't put it down. It is one that I recommended to Geoff because of all the political threads running throughout, particularly near the end. Remarkable that Mortenson was able to do so much. I know this is supposed to be a good story but I could not get through it. With lines like, "But despite the smooth surfaces of his parent's unquestioned faith, Mortenson hadn't yet made up his mind about the nature of divinity." I was on the edge of the amount of cheesiness that I can ignore. Relin also writes, "Mortenson sat on a boulder and drank from his water bottle until it was empty. But he couldn't drink enough of this setting."(18) And that was crossing the line. ...more

i wouldn't say this is a "brain picker" or taxing in terms of difficulty of prose, since it's actually pretty easy to read, but it was more a challenge to me. if this guy, greg mortenson, can just literally stumble upon some people that will change the course of his life and career and make such a difference...then what about me? very cool story about an advocate for building schools in the farthest-to-reach places. and i'm curious about yak tea. ...more
