I get the impression that this book was designed for people who don't usually read books. I'm not trying to be snarky (or not really), but the format is totally disorienting. I started reading it as a Kindle book and was so confused by all the jumping around between photos, sidebars, inset boxes, and captions that I checked out the library book, figuring it'd be easier to read. It really wasn't. The pages, rather than being straight text in blocks are divided into three text columns a la People ...more

Confession: I am not nor have I been watching Downton Abbey.
I am a huge Masterpiece fan and have watched many many of them since the 70's. Some of my absolute favorite entertainment.
However, there have been too many other wonderful distractions, so doubt I'll ever catch up with this series.
Deciding to invest more time in reading is a trade-off and this book was extremely interesting in detailing facts that were surprising.
Perhaps Downton Abbey fans already have all this info - if not - Read it!

This book was pretty good and I recommend it. It did get a little repetitive after a bit and I definitely skimmed parts of it. The layout is interesting since its composed of lots of pictures and news "snippets" and the like. This is *excellent* bathroom reading because you can pick it up, read a little bit, put it down, come back to it sometime later, and not be bothered by the irregular reading pattern. I gifted this book to my aunt, a lover of New York and scandals. ...more

This had its moments, but also had times where I would lose the thread of a story because of a two or three page break in the layout for some sidebar type information. The information was overall enjoyable, but maintaining continuity was challenging. The wealth of pictures is fun in and of itself, as well as the detailed glimpse into a glitteringly wealthy set of American society.
