3.5 stars. It seems slow and long at first, but by the end you realize it was establishing the five characters—four sisters and their mother, adjusting to life in the Congo with the Baptist minister patriarch—who narrate the story. I was most interested in the end of the book to see where the characters ended up.

This is a really thought provoking book. It has vivid imagery and takes you into a world that I otherwise had no clue existed. We've all heard the stories and seen news footage from Africa, but this book paints a more detailed picture of what life might be like in the far reaches of the Congo.

I had heard so much about Barbara Kingsolver that I'm really glad that I finally picked up her book The Poisonwood Bible and I was quite fascinated with it. The stories of these daughters and their experience in Congo was so enriching and different from each other that helped the reader to really get to know each character.
