Strong female characters. I loved the story, especially that it was a fiction based on two real sisters.

This was a terrible, cliche way of making points about slavery. I didn't think the writing was good at all which was disappointing because I don't remember the content of Secret Life of Bees but I remember loving it. An amazing piece of historical fiction that brings to light the story of two real people, the Grimke sisters, who were involved in the Abolition movement. The weave of the story is complex and beautiful. I also very much appreciated the post script in which Sue Monk Kidd untangles fact from fiction and the inspiration for this story.

It was very well written and I enjoyed learning so much about the Grimke sisters-whom I had known nothing about.
But--it wasn't special to me. It was an Oprah book (and I do like some Oprah books!) and her choices can be somewhat predictable.
Also felt it was a bit too long--the story could have been cut down--maybe a little more editing was needed.

The biographical bits were interesting, and there were some key moments that shed light on America's relationship with slavery, but the book was 100 pages too long, and I never found myself attached to the characters or their bonds to one another. ...more
