I started this as a book-on-tape during a road trip 2 years ago so I'd always wanted to get back to it to see how it ended. I wasn't all that impressed. It was more interesting to listen to than to read.

Being 14-year-old girl in times of desegregation is hard, really hard. Thinking that you accidentelly killed your own mother, having abusive father is just the beginning. The rest is running away with black servant that was beaten at the police station and working at honey farm.
I enjoyed this book. The writing was clear and engaging, and it was a fast read. My heart hurt for Lily and her situation throughout the book. Now that the movie is coming out, I can entirely see Queen Latifah in the role of August...I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

Such a sweet coming of age novel! If you're looking for a little warmth and some southern comfort you can find it in this book!
