This could (should?) have been a significantly shorter novella. The ideas behind how humankind ended up stashed away in giant underground bunkers have merit, but they are captured in the preface; the story could have had more impact told in far fewer pages. The characters are not particularly distinct or compelling, unlike Holston and Juliette in Wool Omnibus. If you're wondering whether this series is worth starting, do it. I rarely like sci fi series - I find that a big concept tends to only stay interesting over the course of one book - but this one continues to innovate. The characters are interesting and it's easy to read.
